Employees Supporting Commencement

Hundreds of Campus Services employees play a critical role in Commencement. Many of our contributions are visible such as the tens of thousands of meals we serve, the well-manicured campus, as well as the management of big events. But much work is also done behind the scenes such as shuttling members of the Harvard community, making sure events are safe and secure, and the weeks of preparations in the Yard and Tercentenary Theater to ensure Commencement runs smoothly. It really is a massive, team effort.

Over the last decade, Manny Aguiar has become a central figure in the planning and preparations for Harvard’s single biggest event. From coordinating the colorful banners that fly among the columns of Widener Library to the stage set-up at Memorial Church, and everything in between, Manny has countless responsibilities. He loves the opportunity he’s been given to support Harvard’s mission in such an impactful way.

Manny’s day job is HVAC Operator within Energy & Facilities but every year, he transitions into a role directly supporting Commencement. He helps coordinate most of the pre-Commencement activities across the Yard and Theater including setting up platforms and tents; installing fencing, barriers, and signage; hanging banners; painting stage chairs and backdrops; and much more. But as Manny admits, it can be stressful. “About a week before Commencement is when the anxiety really sets in,” says Manny. “I take a lot of pride in this job and I want to make sure everything is done right.”

While he may be used to some sleepless nights, that pales in comparison to the feeling of satisfaction Manny gets from this work. “I’m honored that they’ve given me the opportunity to do this, support Commencement, and be part of this team.” And Manny believes it’s the entire Commencement team that makes it all possible. “Some people say, ‘great job,’ but that has to be directed to the entire team. Without this powerful group of people, everybody working towards the same goal, none of this would be possible.”

This year, Manny has yet another commencement ceremony to attend. His daughter Laura is graduating from Billerica High School and heading off to college in the fall. It’s been a pretty good year for Manny and his family.
